A graduation backdrop decal is a large-format vinyl lettering set applied directly to a wall, foam board, or fabric backdrop. Unlike a printed banner, you position each piece exactly where you want it, apply it like a sticker, and peel it off cleanly after the party.
What is a graduation backdrop decal?
A backdrop decal is a set of individual vinyl pieces — lettering, shapes, frames — that you arrange and apply to create a custom party wall. Each piece ships with a clear transfer film that holds the design in position while you stick it to the wall, then peels off. The result looks like it was printed directly on the wall.
Our graduation decals are cut from premium calendered vinyl using commercial die-cutting equipment. After the party, they peel off without leaving residue on most painted surfaces.
Sizing for graduation backdrops
The most-asked question: what size do I need? The answer depends on your wall width and how far back party photos will be taken.
| Wall Width | Recommended | Photo Distance | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 6 ft | 24″–36″ wide | 4–6 ft | Table backdrop, small accent wall |
| 6–8 ft | 48″–60″ wide | 6–10 ft | Standard party backdrop, photo wall |
| 8–10 ft | 60″–72″ wide | 8–12 ft | Full room backdrop, portrait groups |
| 10 ft+ | 72″+ / multi-section | 10+ ft | Venue walls, party hall |
Sizing tip from 13 years of orders
Size up from what feels right up close. A 36″ decal fills your vision at arm's length — but in a party photo taken from 8 feet back, it looks like a small accent. For a photo wall, choose the set that fills your wall from where the photos will be taken. When in doubt, send us your wall dimensions in the listing notes.
Graduation design styles
Class year banners
Our most-ordered graduation design. A large year number with decorative elements — tassel, diploma scroll, star bursts, or laurel wreath. Available in single-color and two-tone. Typically 60″–72″ wide.
Congrats Grad name sets
Multi-piece sets that include "Congrats Grad," the graduate's name, class year, and optional school name. A script name combined with a bold block year is the most-requested combination.
Tassel & diploma compositions
Illustrated elements plus lettering — these photograph well from far back and read clearly in group photos.
Minimalist arch + text
A simple arch frame with name and year inside. Works well on textured walls where ornate designs compete with the surface detail.
Personalizing your decal
Every design with "personalized" in the title can be customized with graduate's name, class year, school name, and color. Add everything in the "Notes to Seller" field at checkout. We'll set the text before cutting and send a digital proof for any custom name design within 1–2 business days.

Installation
Surface prep
- Wipe the wall with a dry cloth. On glossy surfaces, a quick wipe with isopropyl alcohol improves adhesion.
- Wait 30+ days after a fresh paint job — new paint off-gasses and can prevent adhesion.
- Eggshell and satin finishes are ideal. Flat paint holds well but is more delicate on removal.
Application steps
- Lay all pieces on the floor to plan the layout before applying anything.
- Use a level and light pencil marks for a straight horizontal baseline.
- Apply the largest piece first, working outward.
- Press with the included squeegee from center to edges.
- Peel the transfer film at 45° slowly. If a letter lifts, press back and wait 60 seconds.
